Macomb teacher of the week: David Visnaw, Anchor Bay High School

    Who he is: David Visnaw is instrumental music director at Anchor Bay High School, where he has worked for four years; manages three concert bands, jazz band and marching band, all of which meet as a class and sometimes after school for practice; lives in Macomb Township with wife Leanne.
    His background: Grew up in Sterling Heights; graduated from Stevenson High school and Michigan State University, where he majored in instrumental music education. "Back in high school, I taught private lessons," he says. "I liked teaching students and the joy that that gave me. I had a certain proficiency on my (saxophone) that allowed me to get a scholarship to Michigan State."
    What makes him special: He says he thinks students find him "very approachable" and that he has an enthusiasm that is contagious. During the hiring process, he suggested creating a jazz band, which he started after taking the job. Under his leadership, the marching band has doubled in size to 140 members.
    Awards/activities: Named the district's teacher of the year at the high school level, chosen by a mix of administrators and students; member of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association.
    What he says: "Teaching music gives kids a sense of responsibility and at the same time makes school fun and enjoyable. Through that, they learn school is a fun place to be, and they learn a real value in the arts."
